01-Apr-2017 – This is the last out of twelve reports on confluence point visits during a one-week trip dedicated for confluence hunting using a combination of car and skis. The story starts at 58°N 60°E and continues from 58°N 68°E.

This confluence is located 19 km from the town of Turinsk, 3 km from the main road Turinsk – Tavda and 2 km from a minor road.

We had an early start and reached almost the nearest point from the minor road to the confluence at 7:30 AM. We chose the point where some track leads from the road to the east towards the confluence. The cold temperature of –9°C meant good snow conditions for cross-country skiing. But the strong April sun would soon rise the temperatures well beyond zero such that on our return the snow began to stick on our skis.

With a cloudless sky and spring chirping of birds, we had an enjoyable and pleasant ski trip. Maxim’s ski that had been broken at the previous confluence visit, had now been shortened such that he was able to walk with the skis which was a much better deal than walking on foot.

We were able to follow various forest tracks up to a distance of 300 m to the confluence (staying on tracks with a denser snow cover was a big help for Maxim).

The confluence is located in Turinsk district, Sverdlovsk region, on a huge open forest clearing with scattered bushes and small trees. In summer, this spot will most likely turn into a meadow.

The whole ski trip took us 3 hours, i.e. each way 1.5 hours. After we had returned to Turinsk, we visited the Decembrists House Museum. In the afternoon, we drove back to Yekaterinburg to spend our last night together before we had to split up again.

CP visit details:

  • Driving distance from hotel: 27 km
  • Distance to a road: 1900 m
  • Distance to a track: 300 m
  • Distance of car parking: 2100 m
  • Distance of skiing: 3100 m
  • Time to reach the CP from the car: 1 hour 30 minutes
  • Time at the CP: 9:00 AM
  • Measured height: 82 m
  • Minimal distance according to GPS: 0 m
  • Position accuracy: 3 m
  • Topography: flat
  • Vegetation: sparsely distributed little trees of various kinds
  • Weather: mostly sunny, –5°C (felt temperature)
  • Given Name: The Sunny Short-Ski Confluence

This day we drove 338 km and hiked (by skis) 5.9 km. During one week we visited 12 confluence points, 8 was first-visited. We drove 3250 km and hiked 48 km (by ski and foot).

The story finishes here.
