11-Jun-2007 – Day 2. Continued from the point 60°N 42°E..

We woke up at 4.30 am, had a breakfast, and then we made morning pictures of Tot’ma churches. At 5.50 am we started onto the road R7 Chekshino–Tot’ma–Nikol’sk towards the point 60°N 44°E.

We drove up to Roslyatino and after Yengish river we turn to the left onto a mud road. We passed the village Popovo and soon stopped in front of a large puddle near the village Shoporovo. We measured its depth, and it turned out that the wheel could almost sink there. We went to look the road further… worth was to come. It was 26 km to the CP. That moment we met a gentleman with two young boys; they’ve gone to the fishing with bikes. We asked about the road and knew that it’s exactly the road to Mumaikha and Bab’ye. But no one can drive onto it. There are only 5 villagers in these two villages; only a postman rides there by bicycle. So that’s how things are! We had bicycles, but it was 25 km to Mumaikha, and then 5 km by a forest. We had many plans and now we resolved to refuse of this point, leaving it for more decisive and prepared confluent hunters.

We returned again onto the R7 route and continued our driving to the East. We reached Zelentsovo and turned to the left again, towards Milofanovo. Our way went along the river Sharzhen’ga up to the village of the same name (in Shirokaya one need turn right, across the bridge). Local citizens call this village “Garage”. As we’ve known later, timber industry enterprise and its workers keep their machinery at this place. Because there isn’t road further on. But we still didn’t know about it, drove close to the forest edge and noticed the “road” paved by thrown wooden slabs. Well, we waddled more 300-400 meters. That’s all! We realized we couldn’t drive further. Here is 7.5 km to the CP. One may ride by bicycles.

We had no time even to think about our plans as we saw the tractor approaching to us. It was tractor with double-axle trailer. It drove exactly where we needed, to Vinograd settlement. We quickly caught our photo cameras, GPS receiver, drinking water and were settled at trailer's cross-beam. The road sometimes looked as a good dirty track, but sometimes the entire trailer’s wheel fell through into the mud. Exciting view.

Arriving to Vinograd after 6 km. It is obviously timber-cutting settlement. There are people there; and the work is in a full swing. It is 2.3 km from here to the confluence. We walked through the village, and then through the forest. As far as 800 m before the CP we crossed a brook. The confluence point is located in a quite dense forest (birches, spruces). A logging path is passed in 60 m from the point. It has east-west direction.

At our back way there was not tractor of course, and it took about 2 hours to reach our car. In spite of time-shortage we stopped to make pictures of road quality. The settlement’s name, Vinograd [literally: Grape] is hardly associated with the surrounding country. But as far as we were under suspicion by local citizens, we couldn't know the origin of that exotic name.

CP visit data:

  • Distance from hotel: 170 km
  • Straight distance to CP from the parking: 7.4 km
  • Walking distance (time) to the CP: 8.3 km (6 km by tractor on one-way)
  • Time at the CP: 11.00
  • Altitude: 173 m
  • Path conditions: brook, dense forest
  • Weather condition: partly cloudy, +13°C

Story continues at 60°N 46°E.
