#1: The Confluence from 60m Distance

(visited by Rainer Mautz)

18-Jul-2023 -- This is the 2nd out of 5 reports visiting confluence points during a one-week bicycle trip in Southern Norway starting and ending in Stavanger. The story continues from 60°N 6°E.

On confluence day, I started from the town Odda down the fjord. Despite the heavy rain, I cycled over the mountain pass (1050 m) to Røldal, the nearest village to this confluence. Around 25 km from the confluence, I left the main road and cycled along the artificial lake Grovastøl. At its upper end a track continues to the DNT hut Middalsbu Hytta, where I spent the night alone. Note: The DNT hut key can be obtained at the tourist information in Røldal and opens all DNT huts.

The next morning, I hiked along the official mountain track towards the confluence (7.5 km, 2 hours). Only for the last 300 m I had to walk through a wet moor. Thanks to my rubber boots this was actually fun.

I found the confluence in the middle of a steam. Due to the heavy rain in the last days, I couldn’t cross the river. But under normal conditions, a river crossing and zero reading of coordinates should be possible.

Afterwards, I hiked back to the hut, cooked lunch there and continued my bicycle trip to the village Haukeli, where I spent the night in a camping hut.
