(visited by Peter Scharfenberg)

04-Aug-2009 -- On August 4th, we started sailing from Nuuk/Godthåb to Narsaq on board the Sarfaq Ittuk, a ship of the Arctic Umiaq Line. During this 36 hours journey several confluence points (CP) will be passed in a certain distance. The first CP was 64°N/52°W, just after leaving Nuuk. But the distance (12 km) was disappointing, as the vessel did not sail beyond the islands but between them and the land. Theoretically, the land could be seen from the CP as well as from the ship, but the visibility was, in fact, less than 2 km, and this situation lasted (on sea) until we saw the mountains of Narsaq, our destination.

It was 3.30 p.m. when the next CP, 63°N/51°W, was passed in 6 km distance. Still, the visibility was so bad that we considered it meaningless to have other photos than those of the GPS instrument. 40 minutes later and 19 km covered, we arrived at the small settlement Qeqertarsuatsiaat/Fiskenæsset. As the ship left the open sea, the visibility improved considerably and minutes before arrival we shot Photo 1.
