17-Jun-2019 -- On my way north to the Scandinavian midsummer I could not resist to visit CP 64N 16E. It was close to the “inlandsvägen” and coming from Strömsund I left the main road 20 km before Hoting to follow the gravel road in direction Rossön. After 5 km I passed the small village of Hällvattnet above the lake of the same name. When crossing the 16th longitude I saw a forest road leading directly north in direction to the CP, and a little later I found a space for the car 1 km southeast of 64N 16E.

The day before was fairly hot with thunder and rain showers during the night. At noon on the 17th of June the sun found a way through the clouds again, but it remained a well-temperated day around 18°C. The air was fresh and the ground still wet, all in all good conditions for a little mountain hike – but good conditions for the activities of other species too! Not the midges caused the disturbance this time, hundreds of obtrusive biting flies were circling around my head, looking for a landing place whenever I stopped moving for a second. To keep away the aggressors I chose the full equipment for hiking and protection, heavy trousers, my wellingtons and my rain jacket with hood.

In the beginning it was an easy walk following the forest road, passing a farm house, but after 300 m the track finished at the skirts of the forest. The remaining 700 m uphill lead through harvested areas of the years before. The ground was covered with bushes and little trees, rocks, moss-overgrown holes, deadwood, swampy water holes … many times I had to stop for a new orientation – many chances for an assault of the flying aggressors. It took me half an hour for the last 500 m, and when catching the zeroes on my navigator at 2.30 pm I was totally wet from sweating underneath my heavy clothes. Forty minutes later I was back at my starting point – and happy, because a fresh wind came up to chase away the flies. So I could change clothes unhurriedly before continuing my way north to catch the midnight sun.
