#1: The confluence point

(visited by Magnus Berglund, Bernt Berglund, Lars-Gunnar Berglund and David Ström)

16-Mar-2002 -- What a day! We started out early morning from Piteå in the north of Sweden (by the eastern border). Drive with car up to Örnvik by the lake of Tjieggelvas. There we left the cars (the road ends here), to continue our journey on snowmobiles.

We followed Tjieggelvas north-west up to Västerfäll and Miekak. At Miekak we turned around (after some coffee) and went back to the small Jåkk (rivulet) Sartajåhkå. We followed the rivlet heading north from the altitude of 483 meters up to approximately 740 meter. Then we climbed up on the mountain to 1100 meters. We had some difficulty navigating up here, since at this altitude there are no trees and everything was covered in snow. This was the first time we were using a GPS, and now we realized what a valuable tool a GPS can be. Once we found our position and direction, we had no problem finding the confluence point. We reach the confluence at about 6 PM (after only 4 hours on the snowmobiles).

The confluence point is on a lake at the altitude of 1032 meters. According to the map, the lake has no name. Around the confluence point there are some higher mountain tops. In east the mounting Staika 1794 meters, and on the west two smaller tops approximately 1220 meters. During our ride up there were some clouds up in the sky, but the last half hour the sky cleared up. The temperature was at about -10 Celsius.

Unfortunately, at the confluence point I showed my inferior skills in photography. Using my Kodak 25 mm compact camera I took some picture on the confluence point and its surroundings. I also took a couple of photos on the GPS. However, I moved in too close to the GPS and the resulting pictures is a blur. Also since the view-finder and the lens is separated a bit, I almost missed the GPS completely. Well, at least I won't do it again...

After our short break here we continued north to the lake Vajmok, and later on to Pieskhaure, close to the Norwegian border.

The last pictures shows our descent to Pieskhaure in the beautiful sunset.
