03-Aug-2004 -- N68/E17 was approached on August 3rd, 4.00 p. m., as part of a 12-day hiking trip. The tour in brief: July 26th by post boat from Drag to Kjerrvika (Grunnfjorden), steep ascent from Lassvika to Lossviktinden (615 m), Baisacohka (576 m), down to Aidi (219 m)- a saddle point between Grunnfjorden and Mannfjorden. Then up to and along Eidryggen (942 m), down to the Langvatnet and along this lake into Sweden, following the Nordkalott-path there to Roysvatnet (Norway), around Bjørntoppen and Gihccejahkka on their south-west side, ascent up to the glacier Gihccejiekna (1300 m), over this glacier in north-east direction, down to the lake Noaidejavri, around this lake, then touching again the Nordkalott-path for a few hundred meters. Finally up to the summit Noaide from the mountains north-west side. The confluence point N68/E17 was found to be at 1300 m (GPS) resp. 1260 m by conventional measurement.
The descent from the mountain followed the path of ascent, but now the rest of the lake Noaide javri was encircled, wading through a rather cold glacier river, back over the glacier but now down to Sørfjorden and then by boat to Kjøpsvik and later by ferry back to Drag, where we started.
On the way down from the confluence point we found some stones marking a place ca. 50 m away from N68/E17 over ground as well as in altitude. This may indicate that somebody too considered to have approached the grid point. Notice that the point is not located in flat area and thus not easy to locate. See picture 7 for this second place.
