24-Oct-2009 --

The Confluence 7°N 72°W lies approximately 110 km from the previous 7°N 71°W, (which I “hunted” just 3 weeks ago with anecdotes and adventures worthy of my ancestor the great explorer Marco Polo), in the territory of Colombia, less than 15 km away from the city of Saravena and 5.2 km (3.2 miles) NW of Bojaba (Arauca), province of Boyacá, Colombia, with an altitude of 278 masl.

I left my town San Cristobal, in Venezuela, on the morning of 24 October 2009, in my pickup truck RAM 2500, 4x4 driving up to the village of El Nula, situated in the province of Apure, then proceeding along the road of La Victoria for approximately 27 km., where I turned to the right and drove down the road leading towards “Puerto Contreras” until I reached the canoe pier on the Arauca River.

After explaining to some persons about the exact point of destination of my trip, I learned that it was more convenient and nearer for me to cross the river in the territory of Los Bancos. So, I drove the last 20 km, 145 km in total, and reached the house of humble peasants, where I safely parked my RAM. Very curiously, however, when passing the road segment between the coordinates N7.04595° W72.00002° and N7.04416° W72.02663°, the GPS continued turning off and did not work well; more curiously, on the way back the same thing happened on the same segment of road. I remembered that I had the same trouble about a year ago between the coordinates N7.65952° W72.01027° and N7.66071° W72.00362°, and this left me very puzzled. Is there anyone who could give me a logical and rational explanation to this phenomenon? I assure you that my GPS, Garmin 60 CSX, has no defects.

After safely parking my pickup truck, I walked ½ km up to the canoe pier, where I encountered young Venezuelan soldiers, who safeguarded the border with Colombia against guerrillas and drugs traffic, and they began bothering me with silly routine questions. I showed them my recent article published in the newsletter “Ruta’s 4x4” with stunning pictures of “adventure tourism”; I had also brought the newsletter for an eventual emergency, and it was very useful. They were so much impressed that permitted me to take photos with them and continue may walk without any further problems.

I passed through the turbulent waters of the river in a fragile canoe equipped with a motor, dodging numerous stones, which emerged on my way, and overtaking the “rapids” with leaps and jumps, which really “make a stomach turn in knots“ (how courageous are those experts navigators).

On the other bank of the Arauca River lies the Colombian territory. I had to walk for 300/400 mt to cross two branches of the river, with the water, still quiet but above the knees, until I reached the embankment. There I found a rickety car waiting for the customers and, he charge the transport service as if it were a “limousine”, I was brought by the driver to the house of his relatives who knew the area very well and who were ready to accompany me to the CP 7N 72W.

In a modest but comfortable hut I was welcomed with a lunch, and later, accompanied by two guides and brothers Carlos and Horacio Gutiérrez, I continued my trip. However, it was rather late, and at 5 o’clock, in the same rickety car, we reached the bridge over the Royota River, where attractive crystal clear waters form what is referred to as the scenery for a refreshing resort. We walked for about 800 mt on the riverbed, and here the unexpected began! The CP 7N 72W in "Google Earth" is not very clear and appears to be located on the riverbed, but the CP is nestled in the forest, on an island between two branches of the river, with vegetation that is extremely high and denser than "the bristles of a broom".

We were so overconfident that had neither a machete nor an electric torch with us, and when moving through the forest, we soon found ourselves in a disadvantaged situation as it was rapidly getting dark, and after some minutes we could not see anything! Not even a faint ray of the "quarter of the crescent moon" could penetrate through high and leafy plants. We proceeded following the light of the lit up screen of the GPS, trying to clear the path by breaking the branches with our hands and arms. It was not until 7 pm that we managed to cover the last 80 meters until we reached the Confluence point. And, finally, I could take all the necessary photos of the Confluence. When leaving the lush jungle, I plunged into the refreshing water of the river dressed, because I felt invaded by many ants and insects that were crawling up my clothes.

I returned with the guides to their house at around 9 o'clock in the evening, and they, kind-hearted and hospitable Colombian people, offered me a bed in their modest, but comfortable hut. So, I slept in a good bed, satisfied with my new "hunting", and I quickly regained my strength. On Sunday morning, October 25th, without any unforeseen events, I began my trip back and here I am to tell and share with you my new experience.

I dedicate this successful event to my beloved grandchildren: Julia, Denisse, Gian Marco & Daniel Sahid, as to entertain the little ones, we, grandparents, must tell exciting new stories and real adventures.

ITALIANO Traduzione Andrea Polo
