18-May-2015 – Having a desire to visit the confluence 8°N 98°E we have studied ways to get there. At the hotel we were told that there is a fisher’s village around the Surin beach and perhaps we could find someone to agree. That beach was about 10 km away.

In the morning we rented a bike in the hotel and hit the road. Left-hand traffic was unusual but wasn’t a problem. We reached around the right place. It was still a little over 30 km by water to the confluence. We started to look for someone who would deliver us to the confluence. After half an hour of searching we found an old man named Tuan (his name sounded somehow differently but we remembered it this way) who agreed to give us a ride on his boat “LongTail”. But it took a long time to explain the goal of our ride. We pointed the location on the map and said that we want there! It made him confused! The old man began to explain that there are no islands, only water. No fish to catch at that time and too deep for diving – generally nothing to do! Taking into account the language difficulties we were explaining for a very long time and the main argument was money! Afte receiving payment for 4 hours excursions on the water, old man calmed down and agreed to take us anywhere!

We've helped to bring the fuel cans to the boat, loaded and sailed off indicating the direction with a hand! It smelled by fish and something not very eatable in the boat, fishing net lay aside. The boat engine was taken from some Japanese car. In fact it was stationary but mounted on a rotating platform. The propeller was mounted on a shaft which was a continuation of the crankshaft. When one needs make a turn he should rotate the propeller with the engine in the right direction. Besides, the propeller can be completely removed from the water and even be put in the boat by rotating 180 degrees. Unfortunately the designers of this mechanism did not care about the muffler. Therefore the unforgettable smell and pitching was accompanied by the roar of the engine. The trip was not pleasant, after about an hour and a half we arrived to the confluence. Our requests to pass to the left, right, back and forth, sideways, etc. put old Tuan in utter bewilderment. We maneuvered 5 minutes and at 12:20 got more or less acceptable result. Taking a picture with a barely perceptible shore of the Phuket Island we headed back. After getting back to the village we said goodbye to the old man and went to our bike. The bike was on its place safe and sound and we immediately felt better.

Already flying off the island we saw the confluence again. After takeoff the plane flies about 20 km directly west and then makes a turn to the north towards Russia. At this very moment we saw the confluence from the air.
