23-Apr-2011 -- In our confluence hunting journey, between 21 and 23 April, which began in N8W65, followed by N9W65, the group formed by Oscar Gonzalez, Carlos Chávez, Carelys Chávez, Rainer Bostelman, Rosalda Roscioli, and Eva Torres, all GPS_YV members, undertook hunting spot N9W66 just south of the Valle de la Pascua in Guárico state, the heart of the central plains of Venezuela.

We came back to west by highway 13, well known as Los llanos route, and at N9 05 30.9 W65 54 46.3 took a road which leads to Parmana at the south of the state, which we were traveling for about 3 miles. Later, at N9 04 23.0 W65 55 06.1, we took a dirt road passing under the transmission lines of 800 KV that comes from Guri hydropower dam, southeast of Venezuela. We traveled about 13 km to a trail in good condition, moving between farms where we could observe the slaughter of cattle, and drive as well on oil facilities known as Ruiz field.

At the end of this way is the Hojas Verdes farm, where we opened the first gate and rode across the savannah 1500 meters to reach the main gate of the estate where we spoke with the foreman of the place, Mr. Henry Machuca, who gently allowed us to step in after having explained what we wanted. Once inside the the farm, we continued for about 500 meters until we reached a point where we had to keep walking for about 350 meters. The CP is in a kind of forest that was completely dry in the summer which gave a ghostly look.

We walked among the dead trees, stepping on dry leaves covering the floor and sounded as if we were walking on cornflakes. At 4:30 p.m. we arrived at the CP and started the glorious dance to reach zero, at a height of 168 m asl. After having taken the obligatory pictures, we walked back to our vehicles and then returned to Valle de la Pascua at 6:00 p.m., where we would spend the night for a deserved rest after the great 3 days of confluence hunting. That night we celebrated our achievement with an excellent dinner at the hotel restaurant where we were. From here we would be leaving the next day, Eva Torres and Rosalda Roscioli towards Barquisimeto some 400 km west, and Oscar Gonzalez, Rainer Bostelman, Carlos Chavez, and Carelys Chavez would take way to Caracas, 250 kilometers to the north.

Economic activity in the area is based on livestock and farming on a large scale combined with a moderate oil production.

Rosalda Roscioli.
