#1: This close but no closer

(visited by Terje Mathisen)

22-Apr-2005 -- This was the fifth confluence visit during a trip to the US, the report starts with 46°N 123°W. The conference I had attended near Monterey finished friday after lunch, and I was going to fly to Florida the next day. This left time to visit another of the confluences near San Francisco.

The trip up was uneventful, besides being delayed quite a bit by the friday evening rush hour: Hwy 1 to Castroville, 156 to Prunedale, then 101 to San Jose followed by 880 and 680 all the way past Walnut Creek to Concord.

At this point I only had to decide if I should drive 680 and 4 around Concord, or go through the city. I did go around the town, which turned out to be a small mistake: The confluence point is located on the east side of the road, and it is illegal to make U-turns, so I had to drive into town from the north end instead, turn around, and come back on the right side.

As the previous visitors have noted, the point is inside a military base, behind high fences, but since the road passes within less than 100 m, there is no need to pass inside to make valid visit. :-)

The GPS photo is from within the car, before I left it to get as close as possible to the point, and to take a photo through the fence.

Since I had WAAS differential corrections all day, the estimated GPS error stayed between 7 and 12 feet.

The next day I flew to Orlando, Florida, in preparation for 29°N 81°W.
