20-Apr-2005 -- Continued from 26N 13E.

On Wednesday 20th April 2005 the 'team' set out by minibus from Miṣrāta for Sirte (Surt), with a side-trip planned to the Roman tombs and fortified farms (30°57'N 14°34'E) in Wādiy Zamzam. Stopping for fuel at 09:30 in a filling station near Tāwurġā' the GPS read 32°01'30"N 15°02'40"E, so we agreed to look to the West for the Confluence that lay some 5 km WSW.

A short way south of the filling station we found an unpaved road heading towards some new houses/farms under construction. At the last of these houses the road degenerated into a track through light scrub until it reached a pipeline bund. From here we reckoned we could walk a kilometer or so across gravely desert to the Confluence.

At 10:13 we were standing on the desired spot and the mandatory pictures were taken, plus one of the smug team. The GPS reading was oscillating a bit and had drifted 0.3 seconds of arc at the time of the photo, but in an area free of all impediment to access and still well within the 100 m accuracy demanded by the rubric. The electricity pylons just visible in the 'Looking East' photograph indicate the line of the main road south from Miṣrāta. Otherwise the Confluence lay 'far from the madding crowd', populated only by a wheatear that found our intrusion into its private world mildly worthy of notice.

By 10:30 we were back at the minibus where a co-operative driver (Sayyid al-Amīn) sat bemused by our manic pursuit, and posed for a final photo. He made it safely back to the hardtop road by 10:45.
