07-May-2005 -- Our group composed by 7 persons: Ricardo “Ricky” Rubio, Diego "Maña" Ojeda, Javier “Pulgarcito” Barrionuevo, Emilio de la Vega, Pamela “Pame” Raigón, Alfonsina “Alfi” Aguirre and me (Gaspar Añó), began the search for the confluence 32S 69W, near a small town called Pedernal in the county of Sarmiento, San Juan state (Argentina), on may 7, 2005.

After several arrangements for the trip, we started it from San Juan city at 9 AM in two trucks: a crew cab, 4WD Ford Ranger and a 2WD F100.

The prefixed plan, obtained from contrasting cartographic and road maps with satellite photos, was to arrive to Pedernal by the route 319, continuing by the same route until a road which comes out onto the Acequión Plain. This road would lead us to the north tributary of the Acequión river. There, we would leave the vehicles and start to walk along the stream to the wanted confluence 8 or 10 kilometers far. In the maps, this little river seemed to be a temporary river, so it would probably remain dry.

At 9:30 AM we were in Media Agua city. After a little break (WC visit included), we took the route 319 to Los Berros and 1 hour and 10 minutes after, at 10:40 we found, at our right (west), a way which seemed to be the searched one, 7 km passed Pedernal. After a long discussion we agreed to advance a few more kilometers, because the found road didn’t go to the cardinal point we expected. 2 km away, near a cultivated area, we found a second pathway that liked us much more (it gave better impression to be the correct way than the passed one). After a litlle debate, we settled this path was the one and, even though a “No–Trespassing” announcement advised us not to continue, at 11 o’clock we decided to continue. 200 m further on, we found a flood plain which, to our surprise, it seemed to be the one we were looking for. In fact, we decided that this riverbed was the one, and we got in it with the pick-ups, because the way was passable at low speed. In this point, our GPS indicated 16 km left (in straight line) to the confluence. As we advanced through the riverbed, the point was nearer. This fact confirmed us that we had found a better pathway than the originally planned. To our surprise, we noted that it was possible to advance with the vehicles along the riverbed and reduce in this way the stretch we had to do by walk. At 11:40 AM, after seeing that the terrain was so bad and we couldn’t continue with the vehicles, we decided leave them and continue the journey on foot, 5.6 km left.

After almost 2 hours of exhausting trekking, going up along the river, at 1:20 PM we left the riverbed and started to climb by the slope of a mountain, 600 m left to the confluence. With no doubt, the confluence was located somewhere in this mountain, situated in the right side of the river. Trying to find the best place to go up trough the mountain, we discovered some animal tracks which were followed to make the scaling easier. The whole group was scaling so we had to take so much care. Fortunately the climbing was not difficult to any of us, and after 20 minutes of exhausting ascent, we finally arrived to the searched confluence. The GPS confirmed us the discovery and conquest of the 32° S 69° W confluence.

After some photos inside the confluence (north, south, east, west) and a petite snack that would bring us sufficient energy to walk back, at 2:40 PM we started the return and arrived to the place where the pick-ups were, at 4 PM. An extraordinary barbecue, done by Ricky and Emilio closed a successful journey at 5 PM.
