#1: Here in the forest is the point

(visited by Vincent Caillard, Julien Gaffuri and Johann THOMAS)

23-May-2005 -- 16:30: On the road D23 between Vanlay and Bernon, we let our bikes on the edge of a field to walk the last 300 meters to reach the point 48N 4E. The day before at the same time, Julien and me left the parvis of Notre Dame de Paris with our bikes kitted out to reach Marseille in around 12 days. The aim is to reach Marseille following the 4th meridian east, crossing 5 different parallels (from 48N to 44N) and visiting 5 confluence points along it : around 1100km and 14000 m of positive height !

Before reaching this point, we went from Paris to Fontainebleau where we spent the night. Then we joined Vincent, he left one day before from Paris and he was waiting for us in the charming village Ervy-le-Châtel. Altogether, we walk along the field before entering a wood with the compass and the GPS to reach the point. The canopy of the trees prevent us from having the exact accuracy (it was difficult to display all zeros !), anyway we are on the point ! Back to the bikes we take the traditional group pictures and we keep going to the South, to end the longest stage of the trip (158km).

Next point: 47N 4E in the Morvan.
