On December 7th I attended a conference in Spała (a resort in central Poland) and in spite of very bad weather I decided to visit the 51N 21E confluence located ca. 100 km south-east. I set off at 9 o’clock the following day. It was cloudy and rainy, there was snow and mud on the road and the temperature was around 0 C bringing the danger of black ice so the traffic conditions were rather bad. I called at Inowłódz to see a Romanesque św. Idzi (Saint Giles) church dating back to the 11th century, at Szydłowiec where I visited the Szydłowiecki family castle – a magnificent Renaissance aristocratic residence, and at Skarżysko-Kamienna in the Sanctuary of Our Lady of Ostra Brama with a replica of the Ostra Brama shrine from Vilnius (former Polish city of Wilno). I also visited Wąchock Cistercian Abbey and saw there a unique monument to all Polish sołtys (locally elected head of a village), came to Starachowice and there I turned south, towards Nowa Słupia.

The road started to climb up what meant that I entered the Świętokrzyskie Mountains (one of the oldest mountain ranges in Europe). I came to the village of Rzepin, turned right, drove another 6 km through the village of Radkowice and arrived at the village of Bronkowice. After the village the road bent towards a forest, I passed by a Bronkowice forestry and less than 1 km further I parked the car at the road’s shoulder near a small bridge over a creek. GPS showed that the distance to the confluence was ca 1100 m as the crow flies. The weather was not convenient for a hike, it was 0 C, wet snow was lying in the forest and rain was pouring down from the dark, cloud-covered sky. I knew from Grzegorz Chyła (the first visitor at 51N 21E) narrative that the area around the confluence point was marshy, so if Grzegorz had problems to reach the zero point in May how was it going to be now? Despite that I entered the forest with hope and went north. Numerous paths ran across the wood, I tried to choose the most dry ones while maintaining the basic direction of the march. I crossed a wide forest road used for pulling out trees from the forest and continued my walk towards the confluence. The reception of GPS signal was quite poor and from time to time it faded out completely so navigation was rather troublesome.

I came to a junction of two very muddy forest roads – from there it was only ca. 100 m to the confluence. Unfortunately, the last several dozen meters were – as expected – very wet. I went across a marshy glade jumping from one tuft of grass to another and reached a tiny stream at the edge of meadow and forest. The GPS readings were very unstable and I was loosing hope to get all zeroes on the display when suddenly I saw them being some 2 – 3 meters into the forest. However, with 12 m accuracy the confluence point could be anywhere within that range. Zeroes on the display lasted to short to catch them on the picture, besides my mobile phone battery went flat and my analog camera is not suitable for taking pictures of the GPS display. Nevertheless, I shot pictures into four (very similar to one another) compass directions (unfortunately, with rain drops on the lenses) and having rested a bit I started the return leg. After fast and somewhat exhausting (because of snow) walk across the wood I returned to the car. The whole tour took one and a half hour. I dried myself, refreshed a bit and hit the road for the return 400 kilometers long journey to Poznań.

Polski

9:00. Było pochmurno i deszczowo, na drodze leżał mokry śnieg i błoto, temperatura oscylowała wokół 0 C i występowało niebezpieczeństwo gołoledzi, więc warunki do podróży były kiepskie. Zatrzymałem się w Inowłodzu by obejrzeć romański kościół św. Idziego z XI w., w Szydłowcu, gdzie odwiedziłem zamek rodziny Szydłowieckich – jedną z najświetniejszych renesansowych rezydencji magnackich, i w Skarżysku-Kamiennej w Sanktuarium MB Ostrobramskiej z repliką wileńskiej Ostrej Bramy.
