(visited by Nageco Survey 201, Mahmoud Buhatua, Mustafa Saad, Muhammad Zubayr and Charlie Micallef)

12-Dec-2005 -- NAGECO Crew 201 is currently conducting a seismic survey at the edge of the Great Sand Seas in the eastern portion of the Sahara desert in GSPLAJ Libya. The confluence point at 28N 23E is located approximately 80 kilometers from the current crew’s base camp. A visit to this location was conducted on the morning of 12 December 2005.

Four men traveling in two separate 4-wheel drive vehicles made up the team for this scouting trip locating the point. The four men involved in this visit were Mohamed Zubeir, Mustafa Saad, Mahmoud Buhatua, and Charlie Micallef. The team departed from base camp at 7:30 am and traveled in a southeast direction from base camp to reach the confluence point.

The terrain consisted of high ridges of sand dunes separated by deep rolling valleys. A number of sand dune ridges had to be traversed and the safe skillful driving and navigation by Mustafa Saad and Mohammed Zintani was very impressive.

The confluence point itself is located in a very remote area surrounded by high sand dunes, sometimes proving difficult access due to soft sand condition. A handheld Garmin GPS III Plus was used to locate the point. The point was marked with an aluminum tag for future identification purposes, and photos were taken to show the landscape at the four quadrants as seen from the location itself.
