English narrative

25-Dec-2005 -- My friend Artem and I had not visited new confluences for relatively long time (since the last visit of Bolshoy Ut, 57N-58E, in July 2005. One of the reasons is the fact that all those confluences that are situated in the nearest environs of Yekaterinburg city and are accessible in one-day trip by means of public transport and bike are already visited. This time, however, we were going by cars, and consequently had greater opportunities in choosing our destination point.

We couldn’t decide on one certain point up to the last day before the trip. We had eventually chosen the eastern direction from Yekaterinburg, perhaps right up to Tyumen city, along 57N parallel. First (57N-61E) and second (57N-62E) confluences in this direction are already visited, and we rode by Sibirsky Trakt (Russian: Siberian Motorway) eastwards, past Bogdanovich and Kamyshlov towns, to Pyshma village.

There were five of us, in two cars. Five graduates of Mathematical and Mechanical department of The Ural State University. Five adventures seekers. Two of us (Artem and I) are keen cyclists, and we have visited several points by our steel (or aluminium) horses before, surmounting distances, muddy tracks, woods and fields. Two of us (Roman and Pavel) are novice cyclists, they had bought their bikes for summer 2005 season both. Artem and Evgeny are keen drivers also. And this time we made our way by their cars.

It is well-known, that the 21st of December is the shortest day in the year, in northern hemisphere of the Earth. We went on the 25th of December. We had, therefore, quite tough restriction of daylight hours for our journey (assuming we want to visit at least two points in one day). We set off from Yekaterinburg city at 6 a.m. Artem and Roman rode by Artem’s car, and Evgeny, Pavel and I by Evgeny’s car. We coordinated our movement using two radio stations, which we always use in our bike trips. After three hours of tiring riding in the dark, we arrived in Pyshma village.

From Pyshma we turned off the Siberian Motorway to the left (to the north-north-west, in geographical terms), about 20 kilometres remained to Pecherkino village. When we arrived to Pecherkino village, we found snowy lane towards the confluence. We drove by this lane, while it was possible for our cars, and stopped at the edge of a forest. About 1 kilometre as the crow flies remained to the destination point.

I should confess, that we strayed a bit around woods due to my fault, but soon Artem seized GPS and led us in proper direction. The point itself is situated in ploughed field, surrounded by forests. We found certain point, where GPS shows all zeroes, and took photos of its screen, the spot and all four directions. We have taken photos of ourselves also, using self-trigger option of photo camera. And afterwards we hurried back to our cars, as we wanted to visit one or two more points this very day, considering that all the points eastwards lie along Siberian Motorway and are relatively easy accessible.

When we returned to our cars, we held a brief counsel. We assessed our chances of visiting two more confluences that day, 57N-64E and 57N-65E, but figured out that we weren’t able to succeed – too little summer time remained, it was expected to grow dusky at 4.30 p.m. Taking into consideration that 57N-64E is already (and not so long ago) visited, but 57N-65E is not yet, and, additionally, 57N-65E is far more interesting (it lies at the bank of Pyshma river and seems to be situated further from passable road, which appealed to us), we decided to drive some hundred kilometres (two degrees) to the east. Unfortunately, Evgeny and Pavel had some business in Yekaterinburg city that eve, and they turned backwards. Artem, Roman and I went on towards adventures.

To be continued (see 57N-65E confluence page).

P.S. I have forgotten to say, that we reached this confluence at the dawn, thus utilizing short daylight hours efficiently. And one more notice. While wandering around groves, we beheld a great deal of hare traces. Tracks and even hare roads and crossroads exist in those woods this season.

P.P.S. Pecherkino village proved to be one of the oldest Urals towns. It is 325 years old, which is more than Yekaterinburg city.

  Notes
Attention: In September 1957 the area around the Confluence received a radioactive contamination from the Kyshtym disaster in a Plutonium production site about 200 km to the southwest. A 2014 publication mentions a radioactive surface contamination near the Confluence, mainly from Strontium-90 and Caesium-137, of 7.5 kBq/m², the half-life of Sr-90 being 29 years, the half-life of Cs-137 being 30 years. Thus the time of stay in this area should be kept as short as possible and appropriate measures should be taken by the visitors to protect themselves against any radioactive contamination.
