#1: View of Confluence area through tall grass

(visited by Ryan, Kyle & Katy van Greunen)

05-Mar-2006 -- On 5 March 2006 the van Greunen family visited the degree confluence at 17 degrees South and 27 degrees East. This is the story of the visit as told by Ryan and Kyle van Greunen, who undertook this visit as part of a school project.

"We woke up early on the last day of our school holiday and Dad had made us bacon rolls and Milo for breakfast. We left for Choma from Mazabuka (where we live) and it took two hours to get to Choma. We took a left turn and went along a bumpy dirt road. And then we turned off the road onto a pathway. We followed the pathway towards where the Confluence was on the GPS until we saw some mud. We slowed down, reversed backwards and went fast to try and get through the mud. But we failed and got stuck. We stayed there for two hours trying to get un-stuck and finally we dug the Landrover out of the mud. Five Zambian farmers helped us dig the car out of the mud, and we are very lucky that they were there to help us, or we would still be there and would have missed the first day of school!

We found another path and followed that until we couldn't drive any more because the ground was looking muddy again. We got out of the car and walked the rest of the way. As we were getting to the Confluence, we saw that there was a river close by and we were worried that the Confluence would be in the middle of the river. Luckily, it was just on our side of the river, so we did not have to get wet. We found the Confluence and took the photos. Mom spent a lot of time taking photos of pretty flowers and then we went back to the car.

After this we drove home and got home very late. We drove for seven and a half hours and were stopped for three and a half hours. It was a long day, but it was fun."
