English narrative

11-Mar-2006 -- This time we (Artem Sismekov and I) decided to visit the 56-59 point, the very point which we wanted to conquer during our last trip as well as 56-58, but due to shortage of time – we spent too long on the reconnaissance part on the 12th of February – we didn’t visit it that day, see our 56-58 confluence report. Remember that we explored the way almost up to Sandalashka small village that time – it was well-worn. This time we sped right to this place.

As usual, we started from Yekaterinburg city at 6 A.M. on Saturday in Artem’s car. The route was: Yekaterinburg city – Polevskoy town – Verkhniy Ufaley town – Nyazyepetrovsk town – Unkurda village – Novobelokatay village – Yanybaevo village – Karlykhanovo village. Although when we ran reconnaissance last time the road from Karlykhanovo village to Sandalashka small village was well-worn, now it was hardly passable for our car – a lot of snow had fallen since that. But we nevertheless reached Sandalashka. We left our car in the village, took all necessary equipment – GPS navigator, photo camera, radio stations, put on leggings – and set off.

We went afoot. The snow was deep – at least knee-deep, sometimes waist-deep. Artem wanted to take skis, but I had no skis and Artem hadn’t brought them either. It is about 6 kilometres from Sandalashka to the point as the crow flies, and about 7 or 7.5 kilometres as we went. Roads and cuttings in wood ran almost up to the confluence point, and it seems that it is quite easier to conquer it in summer, but all these roads are not used for a long time (and are overgrown with small trees and tall grass) and cuttings are not cleared, therefore all these ways are in fact impassable for any kind of transport (even for bike) in summer at all, moreover, they are hardly passable afoot. In winter we just surmounted deep snow and had no other obstacles.

We had not taken any food and other things. It is a point at issue – on one hand it is inconvenient and even dangerous to go such a long trip afoot across deep snow without anything, on the other hand we wanted to stride without backpacks and any burden – the way was tiring enough.

I will not describe in detail our long and exhausting trip afoot. When we came as far as 300 metres to the confluence, we saw that the point lies at the top of small hill with steep slopes. We clambered the last 300 hundred metres through dense young forest and discovered that the point is situated almost at the very summit – an interesting and unusual situation. We took all necessary photos and went back. We followed our very own footsteps in deep snow that time, on the other hand we were already quite exhausted. Nevertheless, after almost 11 hours of very intensive striding we returned to our car. The last few kilometres stretch of our way back was lightened by the moon and stars.

When we at last came to the car we pounced on the sandwiches and hot tea kept in the thermos, and drove home. But we were so exhausted that we stopped in one of Bashkirian villages and slept three hours in the car. We get up at 5 o’clock A.M. on Sunday and at 9 o’clock we were in Yekaterinburg.

P.S. When we made our way to the point, there was an intensive snow. But on our way back the snow stopped. About 20 centimetres of snow had fallen while we made our trip afoot, and when we approached Sandalashka village our tracks were almost filled up with fresh snow.

P.P.S. When we drove from Yekaterinburg to Sandalashka we ran a short reconnaissance of one interesting road. At the stretch of our route between Verkhniy Ufaley and Nyazyepetrovsk towns we were driving past the beginning of an unpaved road that runs along the water pipe-line across numerous hills and is as straight as a direct line. This water pipe-line supplies Yekaterinburg city with water (pumps water from Nyazyepetrovskoye reservoir in Chusovaya river and consequently in Verkhnemakarovskoye and Volchikhinskoye reservoirs). This unpaved road, although not being used almost at all, is regularly cleared by snow ploughs and even in winter is quite passable for cars. In summer this unpaved road is interesting for bikers (I mean cyclists, of course).

P.P.P.S. The average speed of our long trip afoot was less than 1.5 km/h :).
