17-Jul-2005 -- Having our summer holidays in Viganj which is approx. 4.3 nm east of this confluence we decided to make this short trip with a little rubber dinghy.
Exploring this area from the seaside is really exciting. The warm and clear water, secret bights and many micro islands transforming any boat trip into a pleasant adventure. The spot is at the entrance to a sound between the island of Korčula and the peninsula of Pelješac.
Having some steep hills of over 1000 m elevation the islands are forming a narrow canal in which the winds are blowing strong and coming mostly out of westerly or easterly directions.
The historic town of Korčula, of course on the island of Korčula, is an attractive harbour for any type of boats. We saw huge cruise ships, many sailing yachts and surprisingly a lot of international mega yachts showing the toys of the respective owners like helicopters sitting on their own flight deck.
In afternoon when we made the trip the winds were calm and the current set us with approx. 0.3 knots to the east. We let the two kids swim right on the confluence and everybody was happy to have it made. Despite the good conditions during the afternoon we saw, however, later that week a pair of massive tornadoes over the sea between the island of Korčula and the mainland.
