06-Jul-2006 -- VIAJE AL CENTRO DE LA PAMPA

06-Jul-2006 -- TRIP TO THE CENTER OF THE LA PAMPA PROVINCE

I don’t know why in all my trips there is always a confluence in my way. This opportunity wasn’t different.

I was in Santa Rosa, La Pampa visiting friends and surveying some possibilities for future jobs there, when I realized that the unvisited 37°S 66°W was solely at 150 km. Many of my possible captures are studied in my free time and therefore, I had some tentative tracks for approaching at this confluence in satellital photos saved in my notebook.

This confluence is in a lonely place practically in the gravity center of the province, far away of the towns and paved roads. According to the satellital photos, the zone seemed similar to the terrain of another confluence visited by me in the past, the 36°S 66°O .

My soon Pablito and me decided to catch it and then we woke up very early in the morning to do our work because I needed time for many interviews during the day. I loaded the waypoints and the tracks in the GPS and we departed to the west by the route 14. The first 100 km were of asphalt road with a heavy foggy weather.

Thereafter, we took the provincial route 15 to the south in order to find the parallel 37, according to our tentative tracks at 20 km of the confluence. Near it we would find some firewall or rural paths to lead us directly to the point according to our tentative tracks. This firewall existed but there weren’t possibilities to access because there were no gates for entering.

We had to change the plans and then we analyzed very old maps of the Geographic Military Institute (IGM) that we had in the notebooks. Normally, these maps aren’t useful because they show old paths erased by the time but now they were our unique possibility to find the key for approaching to the confluence.

We saw in these maps a possible useful path across the “Meaucó” ranch and we looked for it going back on the route 15 that curiously there was on it. A gate appeared in a curve near this path and we entered without knowing if it was the correct one.

Anyway the landscape was interesting because seemed a sea of dunes covered by “olivillo”, a typical plant that grows in the sand when there is water in the subsoil. Many lagoons in the middle of the dunes confirmed it.

The path led us to the west reducing the distance to the confluence, zigzagging among the dunes. We had to open many gates and we found some peasants that told us that the path continued to the west for many “leguas” (1 “legua” is approximately 5 km) but they didn’t know if it was possible to reach our point, surely because they didn’t understand our “electronic” destination.

In a moment, when we found a path that led us directly to the confluence in SW directions a horseman appeared and when we asked for permission to go ahead, he told us that we had to speak with Mr. Seivane, a man in charge of the land in the ranchouse “El Retiro”, 10 km from here. We went back to that point although the fuel would be insufficient for returning to Santa Rosa.

We found Mr. Seivane and he very kindly allowed us to go in his land. He recommended going to the west up to meridian 66 and then going along the fence “cross country” to our point. He added that the point where the path is crossed by this meridian is an interesting place because it’s the point when three provincial departments’ limits converge (Loventue, Utracan and Limay Mahuida). An old and small tree in this point is named “the tree of three departments”: another kind of confluence was discovered.

Encouraged by that information, we went ahead: we found the “triple point” and then we continued by a funny off road track among the dunes for 5 km to the south.

Finally, we arrived to parallel 37 and we jumped the fence in order to walk 250 meters to the confluence. We had reached another successful visit. It was the 43th for me and the 25th for Pablito.

We took the obligatory photos meanwhile we enjoyed “hearing” the deep silence that involved us in this lonely place.

When we were returning, we though that it was a very good place to do 4WD trips in the future. Four confluences are still waiting for us in this province and they could be the excuse.
