#1: To the west

(visited by Marshall Clow and David Kaplan)

25-Nov-2006 -- We set out on the Saturday of Thanksgiving weekend to visit some confluences. The nearest one to my house (33N/117W) being in someone's backyard, we headed east, out into the desert east of Borrego Springs.

We turned south on Split Mountain Rd, and when the pavement ended, headed northeast (bending around to the southeast) following the old railroad tracks. When we got to the closest point to the conference (about .7 miles, as the crow flies) we got out and took stock.

The railroad is at sea level, and the confluence is about 900 feet higher (Google Earth says 286 meters), up on in a notch on a ridge. We headed up the wide wash on the north side of the confluence, and then headed up the side of the ridge. It took about 80 minutes of hard climbing over loose rocks to get to the confluence, which is on the side of a steep slope.

There is a geocache (http://www.geocaching.com/) at the confluence as well.

After spending a few minutes at the site, we came back down a different way - following the ridgeline. It was steep, but there was much less loose rock.

We left the car at about 0800, and were back by 1100 - and we headed out for the next confluence!
