12-May-2007 --

North American Tour 2007

Continued from 41N 74W

Today is a planned confluence hunting day as we are driving up to Niagara Falls and this is just off I-90, it lies North by about 4 miles. When the distance from hotel to hotel is 409 miles what does this little bit matter?

Up at 6, showered, breakfasted, packed and on the road for 7.15 am, destination 43N/77W and a mere 309 miles to go.

We start off in New Jersey, swing into Pennsylvania and then on into New York. About 2 hours into our journey and we are motoring along, I swing around a bend and see a state trooper at the side of the road pointing a radar at me.

Lift of the throttle, glance at the speedo, dip the brakes and prepare to pull over! Just a little bit too quick, hand him my UK driving licence which seems to throw him a bit. Even more so when I tell him the rental agreement is back in the hotel....

When asked if I know why he stopped he I said yes, I was speeding - one thing I have learnt over the years is if you know you did it, just admit it. That way they can give you a lecture rather than book you. Which is precisely what happened here.

The speed? his radar said 83, wasn't going to argue, I was driving a 5.7 Hemi V8 and a few miles back was going a tad faster than that.

His parting comment "Now you've got yourself a story".

Three more hours and we are in the vicinity of the point, drive past it to the house mentioned by previous reports. I did try to get permission, I really did. However when I got out of the car a large German Shephard dog came running down the hill barking! Discretion wins out, back into the car and back to the CP.

Park on exactly 43N. Walk back to a track down towards the woods. First thing I see? A yellow Posted notice. It isn't obvious if this relates to the woods or continuing on down the track. As I am going left here and off the track I decide to carry on.

Back up to 43N. At this point the satnav has a full WAAS lock and is showing 10 feet of accuracy. Nip into the woods for about 50 yards to the exact spot, still showing 15 feet.

Not a lot to see but trees in all directions so I took another set from the edge of the woods as well.

Back to the car and 108 miles to Niagara.

The adventure continues at 43N 78W.
