#1: View to the west from the summit of Jebel Toubkal.

(visited by Alex Makarenko and Teresa Vidal)

28-May-2007 -- We tried to reach the point by doing a traverse of Toubqal from north to south but didn't get past the summit of Toubqal because of the snow on the Tizi n Ouanoukrim Pass.

From the Nelter refuge below Jbel Toubqal we had two alternatives. Either going up to and over Tizi n Ouanoukrim and following the Asrdoun valley which first goes south and then turns west. Or getting up Tazarhart plateau and searching for a route down to Azib Ifrgan. From the confluence point we were planning to walk about 16 km to Ijoukak.

Our main concern was snow and ice since we didn't have any winter gear. It was late spring but there was still some snow above 3400 m. A guide we met in Marrakech told us that both routes were still impossible. A guide in Imlil said "no problem". A guide at the refuge said he had just came down from the plateau and both of our routes were dangerous even though the track to Toubqal was open. According to him, a month later both routes would have been easy.

We thought about walking up to the pass to check it out for ourselves but, instead, decided to spend an extra day in Marrakech.
