23-Jun-2007 -- Every other year an international air show is held at the Le Bourget airport near Paris. One winter day, while discussing aviation issues with friends over beer, and an idea popped up to go to Paris for the show. And so we did…

I arrived at Paris Orly airport on Thursday, June 21st and the following day we went to Le Bourget. Both the static display and particularly the flying show were really impressive but unfortunately the weather was not very nice – from time to time violent storms and showers were passing over the aerodrome and soon I got soaked to the skin.

On Saturday the weather was much better – it wasn’t raining anymore and even the sun came out. By métro I got to the Gare Saint-Lazare and at 10:42 departed by the regional train going for Mantes-la-Jolie. We crossed the Seine River several times and 40 minutes later I arrived at Triel-sur-Seine. GPS showed that the confluence point was ca. 2 km away. Equipped with Google Maps printouts and following GPS navigation hints I passed through the village and along Chemin des Bois I went into the forest. For the next 15 minutes I followed a narrow, somewhat muddy path that brought me to a mid-forest glade. According to the GPS the CP was 130 m away.

There were several paths coming out of the glade. At first I tried the leftmost one but it turned out soon that I was going too far to the west. I returned to the glade and took the next path to the right. On the right side of the path I noticed an information plate mounted on the tree with quite dangerously looking warning about the risk of collapse of old quarries. Fortunately the CP was lying on the left side. I went down into a shallow hole and after a short “confluence dance” zeroes appeared on the GPS display. The place was not very nice – muddy, overgrown and littered with garbage. Having taken the usual pictures I returned to the railway station in Triel-sur-Seine following the same route. At 14:10 I arrived back in Paris.

P.S. That day in the afternoon I located an Arago medallion (named after French astronomer François Arago) in the great courtyard of the Louvre and the following day another one near the entrance to the Paris Observatory. In 1994 one hundred and thirty five medallions were set into the ground along the Paris Meridian – a meridian line that until the beginning of the 20th century used to be a rival to Greenwich as the prime meridian of the world. So according to the then coordinates it would be my first confluence point in the western hemisphere… ;-)

As it was my first confluence visit in France I also provide the narrative in the language of the host country – many thanks for the translation to Mrs. Ewa (siostra Ani).

Visit details:

Metrem dojechałem do dworca Saint-Lazare, skąd o 10:42 odjechałem podmiejskim pociągiem w kierunku Mantes-la-Jolie.

Wykonałem zwyczajowe zdjęcia i tą samą drogą wróciłem do stacji kolejowej w Triel-sur-Seine. O 14:10 byłem z powrotem w Paryżu.
