#1: Confluence point

(visited by John Dag Hutchison)

02-Jul-2007 -- A friend had to move a car from Oslo to Alta in the north of the country, a distance of about 2000 km as fast as possible. I joined him and we did the trip in about thirty hours, driving up through Sweden which has better roads. We then turned west, passed Kiruna and crossed the border to Norway near Narvik. From then on we were facing the low midnight sun: westwards, northwestwards, northwards and northeastwards.

Somewhere in the North we delivered a "blood maple" (viftelønn) to a friend who tries to make plants from the South survive in the North. It turned out that he lived near the c.p., so we made a small detour to include it. The GPS registration was done at 0256 hours which was no problem. This is the time of midnight sun.

A short time before we arrived we saw a fox with a big bird in its mouth. He didn't seem bothered at all by the car. Nor did the reindeer we almost had to push off the road.

The c.p. was only about 120 m from the graveled road. The temperature was nice, about 8 centigrades. However, approaching the c.p. we woke up all the mosquitoes in the forest so the stay at the point was no longer than required.
