#1: The confluence

(visited by George Angelopoulos)

21-Jul-2007 --

Since i was a kid and my own kids right-now spend some summer-time in Kiaton, a small town by the shore of the Corinthian Gulf. If you look to the northeast from Kiaton you see a steep and cliffy mount, Geraneia, cast it's shadow over Loutraki town and the city of Corinthos. On top of it's great ridge is situated the 38N23E Confluence Point.

Plans for the visit were set for Saturday, July 21 2007, even if the weather prediction warned for temps well over 40 centigrade. This was the reason why the rest of the crew decided to stay and go to the beach instead! So i got on my bike and headed to Corinth, Loutraki, Perachora and finally the small village of Pisia.

From Pisia there is a gravel-road which ascends from the village to the east, as far as the church of Panagia Faneromeni. It was a bit hard for my motorcycle, loose gravel and water-corrosion of the surface but finally approached the CP within 1.5 kilometer. I left the bike and proceeded uphill, under dense wood to the ridge.

The first 500 m were steep and led to a plateau, a small hut and a water spring with stone wall marked the place, fine opportunity to catch my breath. From there it was easier to the CP, situated under the canopy of high coniferous trees. Took some pics of and around the CP and proceeded to the nearest top, some hundred meters away. There was a wind-data recorder for wind-generators posted on the spot and the view was spectacular all-around. Gulf of Corinth, the mouth of Corinth Canal, Alcyonides islands, the Heraion lake, Corinthos city and all seashore towns of the Gulf including Kiaton, where my fellows were taking a swim while i was sweating up on the mountain...
