#1: Lots of corn to the north

(visited by Jack Frickey)

24-Jun-2007 -- Having spent the past three days at a square dance festival in Milwaukee, Cheryl and I were on our way back home to Virginia. We had just visited 41N 88W and were traveling east on local roads along 41N latitude across Illinois and now Indiana. County Road S-230-E passed about 200 yards west of the confluence and then turned east to go about 200 yards north of the confluence. On Joseph Kerski’s visit a little over a year ago in early March, the field was fallow with corn stalks from the previous year. Now near the end of June, the corn was two to three feet tall. My choice would be to walk 200 yards in the same direction that the rows run, but from the road it was impossible to tell which way that was because they planted at least one (and maybe two) passes of the planter around the perimeter. I opted to make my approach from the west and as you might guess it was the wrong choice. I ended up high stepping over the rows about 100 yards in the muddy field until I was 290 feet (photo #5) from the confluence. At that point I decided I was within the distance I could count it as a successful visit, the views would be the same from 290 feet closer, I had to work very hard to avoid damaging a single corn plant and I would just get muddier, so I took my requisite photos and retraced my steps back to Cheryl who wisely waited in the car on this one.

  Notes

Take Exit 215 off of I-65 and go east on SR 114 toward Rensselaer. Continue on SR 114 through town. Approx. 4.2 miles after the center of town, you will cross over a set of railroad tracks. From the tracks, continue 3.6 miles to County Road 230E. Turn left onto this road. At 4.0 miles you will pass CR 150 S / East Moody Road. Go 0.52 miles (2770 feet) further and stop. Walk 737 feet due east to the confluence. If you come to Ryan Ditch, you have gone 800 feet too far.
