05-Aug-2007 -- On my way to the ESRI summer camp 2007 in the national park “Schleswig-Holsteinisches Wattenmeer” I stopped for a break to visit CP 54°N 9°E. Subject of the holiday camp is to provide scholars with the basics of geographic information systems (GIS), amongst others the GPS based data collection in the field. Base of the camp was Tönning, the headquarters of the park administration.

For my approach I took the ferry across the river Elbe from Wischhafen to Glückstadt. Half the way from Glückstadt to Tönning the CP 54°N 9°E is easy to reach, slightly north of the small town Marne.

On this beautiful Sunday afternoon the farmers of Schleswig-Holstein were very busy to bring in their harvest. The CP is situated amidst agricultural areas and fortunately the matured barley on this spot was harvested end of July already. I parked the car exactly 300 m north of the CP and started my walk along adjacent carrot fields. After crossing a small drainage channel I reached the spot after less than 10 minutes at 18.30.

The photos from the surroundings document another branch of intensive utilization in this costal area, the recovery of wind energy. Another 10 minutes later I continued my trip and reached Tönning at 19.15 after a short stop in front of the drawbridge across the river Eider, the natural borderline between Schleswig in the North and Holstein in the South.
