#1: North from the point

(visited by David Coombs)

25-Aug-2007 -- Continued from 40N 33E.

This point lies a liile north of the main road from Ankara to Kayseri. I turned off at Kalaba and just before reaching the village of Paşalı I turned off onto a farm track. The access was very easy with the only excitement being that it had rained heavily the day before and so there was the chance to get stuck in the mud with my shiny new rental car. As it was I just covered it and me with mud and got to the point and back with no difficulty.

South of this point is the strange area of Cappadocia where compressed volcanic lava (tufa) is overlain with basalt. This leads to extraordinary areas of pillars with the soft tufa worn away but preserved by a small cap of the much harder basalt. Another feature is the fact that houses and churches and cities have been carved out of the soft tufa. See the other visits for pictures - mine are the same!
