15-Sep-2007 -- Taking advantage a long weekend to be festival on Friday September 14 in our city, Barquisimeto, Eva and I (Rosalda) decide, to leave in search of the point N11 W70, located in the state Falcon, to about 250 kms. Of our origin point. We take the interstate highway 4, heading for Churuguara, once here we plan everything to leave on Saturday at 8:30 AM, in our friends' company Carmen, Francisco and Alejandro Malave. In the morning we continue for the highway interstate 4 well-known from here as the highway Coro - Churuguara and after traveling 27 kms, we take a road paved to the left that would drive us directly and quicker to the Cruz de Taratara population , distant of there about 24 kms. In the Cruz de Taratara, in the gas station we take a road west toward Pecaya village to about 20 kms.

When arriving to Pecaya, guided by a satellite image and our GPS, we take an unpaved road to the left bearing south west, in this point the CP was at a distance of 21 kms, after cross several villages that are in the area, and cross the river mitare and several gulches that fortunately took very little water, we arrived to the village El Venadito of there we continued for one it thrashes to the west toward another called village Las Veras and we arrived to a point in which were to 220 mts of the our objective, this it was of the other side of the gulch, so we leave our vehicle and we cross the river that it took little water, walking for paths of tunas and cujies, we could see wild rabbits run near us, and great variety of brilliant small lizards of blue and green color that they are typical of this area, in few minutes we were dancing to get the zeros in the GPS. The point is to 174 msnm.

We take the pictures and we return to the vehicle where we moisturize ourselves, after the hot walk, with some very cold drinks and also to celebrate our successful hunt.

The Pecaya town of so single 500 inhabitants’ is located in the area of the center west of the state Falcon, of semi-arid and not very fertile lands where the predominant vegetation is the tunas, cactus and cujies. Their more important economic activities are the breeding of goats and to the exploitation of vegetable species as the zábila (aloe vera) and the Agave cocui.

Its very notable of Pecaya like of the area in general, it is very well the production of the appreciated cocuy liquor, also called penca cocuy or cocuy pecayero, this pure liquor of agave is compared to the best in the whiskies and to the demanded in the tequilas (product also derived of the agave), due to the level of superior alcohols that possesses and that it can arrive to 50 grades. The Government of the state Falcon, has declared the Cocuy Pecayero (decretory 167) as regional cultural patrimony and the granted the origin denomination to it.

Ethnography Studies among them that of the anthropologist Jorge Jaber, reveals that the presence and importance of the agave cocui plant in our culture go back to the era of the meso-Indian, (500 at 1000 B.C.). In our era, it is known, by the chronicles of the historians that the Indian jiraharas, resided in that area, already produced lot cocuy liquor before the arrival of the Spaniards. Besides producing the liquor, in that time the agave cocui constituted a rich food source mainly in summer times and shortage, the well-known fiber was also extracted as dispopo to knit chinchorros or hammocks and canvas shoes (sandal species).

In the XX century, the production of the liquor became an important item manufacturer, in 1927, the liquor store "La Joya" it marketed the mark Cocuy Valensey as if it was a brandy, inclusive in the neighboring Netherlands Antilles knew and they adopted the liquor and from then on they have not stopped to consume it. In Aruba for example, where by the way agave plants don't exist, the house Plays Liquor and Bottling Co, sells for 50 years, a drink that is denominated "tropical Coecoei". The legend that accompanies the liquor makes allusion to the indigenous tribes of Coro, Venezuela, as original makers of the drink. With the sentence "Try Aruba's Best", the cocuy is promoted that one shows off, it comes from Pecaya.

Another curious fact with regard to this drink is its therapeutic properties, Although there is not scientific confirmation, the popular belief it attributes to the cocuy medicinal effects, the guarapo or juice of the plant is multi vitamins and helps to the feminine fertility, a little cup of the liquor in the morning and another in the night controls the diabetes, the cholesterol, the arterial tension and the triglycerides, it is rich in potassium, vitamin D and minerals, and until it is good for blows, twists and pains using it in topical way.

We could also observe that for this area wastes away a lot the goat meat, already of return we stopped in in Santa Cruz of Pecaya, a small village very near Pecaya, where a rustic restaurant exists where they serve meat of very good roasted goat and we could taste a good meal, to this place people come from the near and not so near towns as Coro or of the peninsula of Paraguana to eat here.

In our journey several residents of the area they recommended us that we visited the thermal waters, we revise our map Venrut and we locate the thermal waters to 12 kms to the NO of the N11W70, so we decide to know these wells of thermal waters the following day. We made the same journey, until the village El Venadito we take one it thrashes but this time to the right in north sense, after traveling 9 kms we get the wells, a series of holes in a gigantic rock located to the Southwest of Pecaya in a small surrounded valley of hills, is almost a spring desert, with very scarce vegetation. The source sprouts in the crest of an anticline, where the predominant litology is the gritty ones gray of The Miembro San Juan de la Vega of the Pecaya Formation that dates of the inferior Miocene era, the characteristic but resaltante is the presence of two travertine cones, one of them inactive, and other where there are 16 holes, of where the water sprouts together with great quantity of gas Co2. In the hole bigger than this section, the water has a pale green coloration something yellowish, due to the presence in suspension and being deposited in the banks and bottom of the well the alunita mineral.

These holes or wells generally have variable sizes and depths bigger than 2 meters, with temperatures average of 38 centigrade grades. The flavor of the water is lightly brackish and resemblance to the gasified drinks. This source is used by the villagers to take bath. The water of this spring deposits throne, and it also eats away the calcite cone.

We take advantage to submerge our feet in this water, since the villagers attributing especially medicinal properties for skin affections.

During the return itinerary we hear thunders so we hurry the march since we should cross 4 gulches and the river mitare, fortunately it didn't rain and we pass the rivers without problems, however when arriving to the asphalt highway we had to wait some minutes to cross one of the gulch path in the highway, since one of the so many rivers of this area brought enough water, product of the rain in the well-known Mount the Sierra of San Luís. We return for the town of San Luís located to the north in the mountain that takes their name and that this to 900 mts of height, that which allowed us to observe that spectacular contrast of arid and hot lands to humid and fresh lands in the same area. We arrive to Churuguara, we say goodbye to our friends and we continue our trip toward Barquisimeto arriving to the 9 PM, with a total journey of 550 kms.
