#1: Blackadore Island

(visited by David Drescher, Roy Miller, Rob Norem and Servero Guerrero)

20-Feb-2008 -- It was an early wake up on Feb. 20, 2008 in order to meet our fishing guide Servero Guerrero at the dock at 7:00. David Drescher, Roy Miller and Rob Norem, all from Oregon were going bone fishing on the west side of Ambergris Caye, Belize. We were all ready to bag some "bones" and David, the geography nut, was also anxious to bag a "point."

When it was time to wrap up the fishing David asked Servero if he would take us about 5 miles northwest. We tried to explain in vain, but we headed that way non the less. He asked us if there was buried treasure at that spot, we said, "not really." Meanwhile Roy was losing his sense of humor having the roughest riding seat in the boat and not much interested in the point. It seemed like a long 5 miles but we got there surrounded by the robin egg blue water that is so beautiful in the Caribbean.

Servero pointed out Blackadore Island just to the northwest of us a mile or so. It seems Leonardo DiCaprio purchased it for $2.4 Million and plans to build an eco-resort on it. Other than that, 18N 88W pretty nondescript in about 10-15 feet of gin clear water. The wind was blowing pretty good and there was a lot of chop on the water, so we navigated as close we could to 18N 88W.

We took pictures of us and the GPS. Servero was highly entertained by the whole thing and we promised we'd send the projects website and our point. Who knows, maybe he will head out to sea and bag his own point.

  Notes
About 3.8 km from the eastern shore of Ambergris Cay. A small reef islet is lying about 1.4 km to the SE, some other islets are lying further away to the NW. Visibility of land will depend on the observer's height above sea level, and on the elevation of Ambergris Cay and the islets.
