#1: General View of Confluence Area

(visited by Stephen Langman and Fiona Langman)

18-Mar-2008 -- After our first successful confluence visit for the day, we were keen to get our next confluence completed as soon as possible, as we still had a lot to do for the day before returning to Renmark. Making the most of some shady trees alongside the Murray River at Mildura, the first thing that I did before lunch was to remove all the small grass seeds from my shoes and socks, as we knew we had a good walk still in front of us for the next confluence visit.

Taking the Silver City Highway from Mildura, we crossed over the Murray and headed out through Buronga and on towards Wentworth. The two previous successful visits to this confluence approached this confluence from the Fletchers Lake Road, just before reaching Dareton. Studying some detailed topographical maps prior to doing this confluence, there were old tracks leading from the south of this confluence, but further west of Dareton, so we intended to approach from this road in the hope that we may be able to drive quite close to the confluence, without having to walk so far. Finding this old road was no problem, and showed that we were just less than 10 kilometres from the confluence. Within a kilometre of starting this drive, there were a mass of tracks going in all directions. Using the GPS and keeping the track up, things were going quite well and we were now less that 4 kilometres from the confluence, when the track that we were following came to an abrupt end. After backtracking and unable to find any further tracks that we would be able to follow, it was all the way back to Fletchers Lake Road and straight to the confluence. Not wanting to leave out car on this main road, we were able to find a side track that headed south from the main road and we were able to drive just over a kilometre from the main road, but were still 1.9 kilometres from the confluence.

It was at this point that Fiona said that we must be mad, as it was over 38°C and no shade anywhere, so it was a very fast walk out to the confluence. With all the required photos taken, it was a quick retreat back to our waiting vehicle and an ice cold drink from the car fridge and to get the airconditioning going to cool us down. From here it was on to Wentworth and the Old Coach Road back to Renmark.
