#1: General view 2 km from the Confluence

(visited by Helmut Resch and Babs Coleman)

20-Nov-2008 -- This is the 46th of a series of 83 confluence visits during our voyage from Nigeria to Europe and back to Nigeria around the entire African continent. It all started on 28 January at 11N 5E.

Story continues from 26N 28E.

We are spending a couple of days in Aswān before heading to Sudan. Our aim this morning was to visit the confluence 20N 33E. We were driving outside of the town and found a sign directing us in the direction of the temple of Philae, which lay more or less in the desired direction, for a while at least. From there we found a road which lead us to the road from Aswān town to the Aswān High Dam. Near this intersection we found a newly constructed road leading in the direction of the Confluence.

1.9 km before the Confluence we got stopped at a military road block and could not continue. The soldier could not speak any language we understood, but there was a sign. The sign in English, French, and German revealed that this is the start of a special military area which is only allowed to be entered with a special permit. It is also not permitted to leave the vehicle. We had no option but to return to Aswān.

Continued at 20N 33E.
