#1: The Confluence

(visited by Rainer Mautz and Elionora)

13-Apr-2009 -- This report is the first out of a series of four confluence visits.

Our confluence visit took place on the 3rd day of our one-week vacation to Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan. In the morning of that day we hiked in a wādiy near al-Karak (Kerak, 30 km north-west of the CP). When the temperature got unpleasantly hot, we continued the drive towards the south of Jordan. Since we were driving on the motorway no. 15 that misses the Confluence by just 800 m, the visit of this CP was an easy cake. We left the highway at the exit for Wādiy Abyaḍ and parked our vehicle at a distance of 1.3 km at the intersection of the country road and the railway line. This railroad is the famous Ḥijāz (Hejaz) line; this section had been finished in 1906. Currently, this line is closed for reconstruction and it is not clear when it will open up again. One railroad bridge can be seen from the CP, see the confluence overview. Our short hike followed a dry river bed with flowers and wild barley.

We were wondering who had planted these grains – probably they are remains from former agricultural activities in the area. The confluence itself is a typically desert stylish point – not spectacular covered with sand and various volcanic stones. However, its location is somewhat special – being squeezed between the highway, an overhead-power line and the railroad of Jordan's main north-south connection.

We continued our trip towards the south immediately and reached the town Ma`ān about an hour later.
