22-Apr-2009 -- After my first confluence visit, that was a new visit on the Titicaca lake in Bolivia, the second one was located in Austria. Here, there are no more unvisited points to discover. Some new aspects remain though. While reading the old visit reports, I noticed that all visitors up to now came by car to Altenmarkt and started from there. So I got the possibility to get there from the south. Apparently I also was the first one who used the railway.

I was in the area of Vienna for taking part in the annual conference of the European Geosciences Union (EGU). There I had half a day for my trip, enjoying best sunny weather during the warmest April since meteorological measurements are carried out.

First I took the train from Wien-Mitte (Vienna-Center) to Leobersdorf. There I had to switch to a tiny regional train with destination Weissenbach-Neuhof. Although the railroad still goes on, it is the final destination for passenger trains.

Leaving the train station, I crossed the village and took a footpath between the railway and the small river Triesting northwards. After about one kilometre one has to cross the river on a small bridge and follow the road to Altenmark for a while. I crossed the river again at the next bridge and went on northwards on the left side of it.

As I didn’t have a good map of the region I followed the way until I was exactly east of the confluence. From there I walked cross country to the West. First I had to climb a steep edge. After that the terrain was a bit easier. Some time later I reached the trail coming up from Altenmark, which I could follow westwards. I had to leave this trail 200m north of the confluence and walk through the forest. First it was steeply uphill and then downhill again. Only about 40 m from the confluence I passed a small path on which I could have reached the spot much more easily. The remaining meters haven’t been a problem anymore.

After taking the photos I could follow the small path to Weissenbach easily. I can strongly recommend to future visitors to take the same approach, I did. It will take about six hours. The walking distance from the railway station to the confluence is about five kilometres.
