#1: General View of Confluence Area

(visited by Stephen Langman, Fiona Langman, Andrew Murrie and David Lloyd)

11-Aug-2009 -- Continued from 28S-126E.

During the previous four days, we travelled further down the Connie Sue Highway to the Rason Lake Road, a two wheel track pushed through the virgin bush that took us through the Plumridge Lakes Nature Reserve and then further north to Lake Rason. The country had changed dramatically over this distance, from sand dunes and Marble Gums and Spinifex, to Blue Bush, Mallee, Black Oaks and Sandalwood. After travelling the full length of the Lake Rason Road, it was a small detour down the Coglia Merolia Road to locate tracks that should take us quite close to the actual confluence point.

Prior to leaving home and checking Google Earth, there had been track made in the area since Steve Leopold’s first visit, over 5 years previous. Once again Google Earth makes it look so much easier, as the tracks had overgrown, or were in the process of going that way. We were still able to drive to within 1.2 kilometres of the confluence point. It may have been possible to drive a lot closer, but seeing that I was now down to only 5 tyres, after destroying one on the Sydney Yeo Range track, I did not want to take my chances, so we set off on foot.

The vegetation was open and easy to travel through, mainly Bluebush, Mulga and a small patch of Mallee. With another successful confluence, it was an easy walk back to the vehicles and on to Laverton for our first hot showers in 8 days, after the most perfect time in the Great Victoria Desert.

Continued at 28S-123E.
