#1: Nearby area of the confluence point (approx. 10m)

(visited by Sven Loechner and Simone Klotz)

16-Aug-2009 -- After completing our "first visited" confluence point 57N 123W the day before, this point today looked really easy and great on the map. The area is well accessible through forest and maintenance roads.

So we took the turnout from Highway 97 (Alaska Hwy) and followed the unpaved road for the next 10km. Then we took the wrong turnout and found us in the middle of a gas and pump station [#8]. Even while we searched for the best way out of this labyrinth of buildings and pipes we had already a "visit" from a security vehicle. It quickly became clear that we were not one of those activists, who had been playing in recent weeks, attacks on installations. After we had received a few tips on the proper route, it was easy to find the start of the hiking to the confluence point. Oh yes, one of the two security guards had worked longer time in Germany and was glad to demonstrate the learned language skills to his colleague. Okay, let us get back to the confluence part…

So after the pump station we took the right road for another 7.5km and parked our car close to an open countryside. The confluence point was easily accessible via an old forest road (#9) - just 400m straight on. The point itself is located some few meters in the forest.

Then we took our pictures from the confluence point and took the same way back to our car.

One can surely say that this point - compared to the other previously visited points – was the simplest accessible point.
