05-Dec-2009 --

05-Dec-2009 -- To the north of Avila, at an altitude of 820 meters above sea level and at a distance of 65 km. from Ávila, we find Mamblas municipal district, in the region of La Moraña and the legal jurisdiction of Arévalo.

The landscape of flat extensive fields, sprinkled by abundant poplar and pine forests, is surrounded by an almost mystical peace, which is only interrupted by the songs of the assorted types of birds or the quiet pace of the sheep.

It is a region dedicated to agriculture, mainly to cereal, which still keeps a rich Mudejar heritage from a time when three religions coexisted in Spain.

The most important towns of the Moraña de Avila are Arévalo, Madrigal de las Altas Torres and Fontiveros, (where the religious poet known as San Juan de la Cruz was born).

Taking advantage of the long weekend that celebrates the Spanish Constitution, Javier and I went from Valladolid to Arévalo by the A-6 and from there to the confluence 41N-5W.

We dedicate to this historical town most of the time of this short trip and we visit its historical quarter, in which it enhances La Plaza de la Villa (today under reconstruction works), and the striking Arco de Alcocer, as well as many religious buildings. And if the traveller is hungry the Asadores (charcoal barbeque restaurants) of this city will make him think that perhaps Segovia is not the unique capital of the roasted piglet. Anyway, it is also possible to enjoy the Spanish tradition of going to different bars to have tapas.

After tasting some tapas we went to the confluence that is to the south-east of Mamblas. To reach it you have to take the highway of Arévalo to Madrigal, taking the exit to Mamblas and later along a track, where we waded the Zapardiel River. We did all this without difficulties because the river was dry and the track in good state. From where we left the car to the confluence we walked about 70 meters along a harvested field and only visited by the sheep that grazed there.

The large space of the landscape allowed to making out up to six towns in the distance, among them Madrigal de las Altas Torres, another one of the towns that deserves to be visited. As it is possible to deduce from the story, the confluence is very simple and easy to find.
