(visited by Rudy Fuentes and Santah Fuentes)

01-Mar-2010 -- We left our house in Matobato, Calbayog, Samar at 7 AM in the morning of the same day for the trip to the southern town of Burgos, Leyte to visit this previously unvisited 10N 125E confluence. The place is not a tourist spot and that could explain why no one has yet visited this before. This trip is a component of the three-day trip to Bohol-Cebu to attend the wedding of Mia Santiago, my wife Santah’s niece on March 6, 2010 in Cebu City. Also planned along the way is a quick visit to 10N124E confluence in Clarin, Bohol.

We knew that the nearest land point for this confluence is somewhere before Tangkaan Point but upon checking the shoreline; it was a long rocky beach at very low tide. I saw the boats were too far from the water and most boatmen are reluctant to carry these boats at distance exceeding 100 meters by sheer muscles. So we decided to proceed further and we reached the small port of Burgos. There were boats on the water and we chose one and looked for the boat owner. We arranged the rental and asked him to hurry before the sun sets. The water was choppy and I found out that we have to make a round turn at the end of Tangkaan point because the confluence was on the other side. So the estimated 4 kilometer trip actually became about 6 kilometers.

Halfway to the trip, the boatman slowed down and was hesitant to continue because he thought he won’t have enough gasoline to return back to the port. This fear was partly because he did not understand what we were doing. He wanted us to take pictures then and come back to the shore. I patiently explained that this was not the location we wanted and if necessary we have to go back to the shore to fill up gas and come back. We stopped completely and he was undecided. I asked him how much gas he had but he did not know. I asked him if he had more than one liter of gas and he said yes. I am also a boatman in my hometown Samar where I frequently fish offshore as a hobby and I also have a motorized boat albeit smaller than his but I know the mileage of his 16 HP engine. I told him, one liter can make about 8~10 kilometers and I knew the confluence was only 2 kilometers away by then and explained that we have enough fuel to continue to the confluence and back. It helped him decide so we continued but I asked him to go on moderate speed for economical run.

We reached the confluence about 5 PM. After taking some photos, we returned with enough fuel to spare.

After several confluence visits, I usually found it a waste of time explaining what confluence visit is all about because almost nobody understands. Coordinates, Latitude, Longitude and integers are strange animals to digest by common folks. So I always give a simpler but easier-to-the-credibility explanation: With an instrument (GPS) as guide, we want to visit an exact spot X kilometers away from the shore and we will take pictures in four directions, then we go home. Simpler minds need simpler explanations.
