31-Dec-2010 -- As every year we spend the quiet time between Christmas and the new year with our friends in the town of Heringsdorf at the shores of the Baltic Sea. It is cold, we do a lot of cooking, we have fun, and we have Wireless LAN.

The confluence of 54N 14E is quite close and the 15th anniversary of the first visit on ice was near. We've been here for many years during the winter season, but this was the first time the 'Achterwasser' (the pool between the Baltic Sea, the island, and the mainland) was frozen. So we, SuSanne, Daniel, Harald, and me drove out 15 km to Loddin by car (SuSanne by bicycle) and took a walk on the ice to the CP.

The last couple of days we had a temperature of down to -15°C, but during this day it went up to plus 2°C, so we encountered some puddles on the shores of Achterwasser and also some cracks in the ice with water sputtering out. But we plucked up courage and took the 2-km walk on ice to the CP. As a reminiscence to the first time visitors we took some alcohol and some fish with us, see the photos.

As 15 years ago, in a distance of a few hundred meters fishermen were installing nets under the ice. They came there by foot, as, according to them, the thickness of the ice was only sufficient for a 'Trabi' (a lightweight former GDR type of car). They expected to catch 3 or 4 zanders the following day, so maybe this kind of fishing was more or less a fun event for them. Anyway, we walked back and had a nice look out to Achterwasser from 'Waterblick' enjoying coffee and cake.
