(visited by Tom Arneson)

28-Jul-2011 -- I was accompanied by my friend Norman on the drive. We left from Hinkley where he and his wife were staying in their camper. We took the scenic route, MN-23, to Duluth and spent an hour or so sightseeing at the harbor. We approached the DC via County Highway 44 and then on a good gravel forest road that took us north of and then east of the DC. I new from my recon via maps and GoogleEarth that there was a track leading southwesterly to near the DC. That track was blocked by a berm and ditch near its start. So I had to walk in. Norman decided to stay with the car and not make the walk in with me. Someone had a shooting range set up near the beginning of the track with targets set out to about 250m. I was glad that Norm was there so he could tell the shooters that I was down range if they showed up. The track had been used by some ATVs earlier in the season, so I could follow it as it went up and down over the rough ground. After about 800m there was another ditch and berm blocking the track from use by large vehicles, but the ATVs took a short detour around the barrier. Just beyond the barrier the track dropped down and crossed a small stream. Someone left a 2x12 board as a foot bridge. There were some tracks that branched off, but I stayed on one took me within 27m of the DC. From there I bulled through the second growth trees to within 2 meters of the confluence, where I stopped and took the four directional photos, using the direction to the sun as south. My total round trip walking track was 2.72km and took 45 minutes. I was bothered by deer flies throughout the hike and killed at least a dozen that were biting.
