(visited by Shawn Fleming)

10-Oct-2011 -- This would be the third of 11 confluence visits on a trip to Colorado coming from 33N 106W. Timing certainly is everything when you are on an adventure. When I planned this trip, I had hoped it would allow me to visit the Trinity Site. I had spent the night only 31 miles away but unfortunately, I had missed this opportunity by 8 days. Maybe next time!

Following my breakfast, I continued north on US-54 then west on County Road 55/State Route 14 until a dirt road intersection where I turned west. This was a fairly decent dirt road and passing an abandoned mobile home continued south to a point abeam a water tank where I would park and hike the remaining distance.

I found the confluence in a clearing on a generally north facing slope. The nearest remarkable item was a cow pie followed by a mound approximately 5 m NW with cactus and bushes on it. I set up for my data collection, pictures, and SPOT notification for friends and family that were tracking my progress.

Pathfinder Office Post Processing 582 data points from my Trimble Juno reveals an average position of 34° 00’ 00.01186”N, 106° 00’ 00.02699”W with a horizontal precision of 2.0 meters and an altitude of 1844.580 meters with a vertical precision of 1.5 meters.

On my way back, I stopped to inspect the water tank. It was being filled by a thin stream of very clear water from an electric pump.

From where I parked, it was a 2 km round trip hike and about 47 minutes that included about 20 minutes of time at the site capturing TerraSync data. It was a 15 km round trip drive on dirt from where I had turned off County Road 55/State Route 14. Total drive/hike time and distance off US-54 was 1:56 and 62.8 km. I was nearly to Corona before I saw another vehicle since I had departed Carrizozo starting my day. Talk about the Road to Nowhere!

My adventure continues at 35N 105W.
