05-Nov-2011 - It was November 05, Saturday 8:00 am when we arrived at Trujillo city, after almost 10 hours of overnight bus. We had breakfast at the main square and took immediately a taxi to the point where we had foreseen to start the walk to the confluence through the desert.

In our pre-exploration made at home using tools such as Mapsource and Google Earth, we could distinguish a dirt road just two kilometers north of the confluence, but being there we could not find the detour leading to it, which in the long run was providential.

The taxi driver exited the Panamericana Norte and entered the desert by a road he knew, turning our ride into an unattractive tourist route that scared us a little. The point is, that on this short journey we passed in front El Milagro Jail (Saturday is visiting day, so… long relatives’ lines), the city’s landfill (where no hole is “filled”, but the garbage is accumulated up forming a hill 20-meters high and 2 km long) with its picturesque satellite neighborhood entirely dedicated to recycling; and finally the informal cemetery of El Milagro.

Having left these “three interesting tourist attractions”, we thought: - Ummm, this can’t get worse – but this did not ease us any bit.

The taxi driver continued until we arrived to a quarry where we met Percy, the person in charge. After having explained our intentions and showed him our destiny toward East, he recommended that we should try and follow a direct line to the point of the confluence and return back to the quarry, and that by no means should we get near the road at the North as people are assaulted there…

Our GPSs showed that we still had a little more than 5 kilometers ahead.

The hunt

We started walking at 9:34 hs through sand and crushed stone, traversing dry riverbeds, sand slopes and gently sloped land for about 5.3 kilometers until we reached the confluence at 11:30 hs. The surface of the slope where the confluence is located is made of sand and stone compacted by weight and eroded by wind, rendering it very unstable to step on.

After a few slips and detours we succeeded to find the exact coordinates, took the required pictures and returned to the quarry at 13:50 hs. After sharing a nice chat with the quarry workers, one of the drivers rode us back to the Panamericana Norte, where there is public transportation to almost any point of Trujillo. We decided to complete the day visiting the Fortress of Chanchan, a magic place, filled with culture, history and art.
