12-Jun-2008 – This spot is a good example that the report should be written immediately after the visit. Only let yourself to postpone it once and you're done! The more days pass the harder to make yourself write these few lines. It happened even worse this time. I simply forgot about the fact that we have been on 57°N 31°E.

Luckily Sergey asked me one day if I have written the report about that hunt. Otherwise I would never remember our trip to the south part of Novgorod region. Fortunately he remembered about it in detail. With his help as well as through the photos I was able to restore everything in my memory too.

The visit was in 2008. We drove to Kholm from Staraya Russa. One hundred kilometers road between the two district centers of the Novgorod region was built in the Soviet era. Unfortunately present owners did not maintain it properly. All along the road speed above 40 kilometers per hour was just impossible. Here I should say that recently the repairing of road had been started. When I was there in the fall of 2012 there were only about 30 km of unrepaired road surface near Kholm.

After Kholm we went to the village Bobyakhtino. There we turned to Orlovo, passed it and few villages more. After about 15 km the forest road came to the spot as close as possible. It was no more than two hundred meters. Someone made the place of rest right here. We set up a camp.

The place seemed very attractive at first glance but after closer examination it looked pretty bad. Time and weather have not spared people’s work. The arbor was ready to collapse at any moment. The people themselves as usual has not been spared the nature. The empty bottles and plastic ware were scattered around.

We fixed the arbor and cleared the clearing of the debris. After that we started cooking in a high mood.

After dinner we walked up to the confluence. Sparse pine forest allowed getting to the spot without any problems. On the way we met cheerful young fir-trees. Apparently they felt very comfortable among their colleagues for the coniferous shop. Bumps on their thin branches were sometimes enormously huge.

Closer to the confluence the forest changed a little bit. The spruces dominated there but undergrowth was still little. Zeros were caught relatively easy.

In the evening a good impression of the place was a bit impaired by a cloud of midges. It were frankly aggressive and the net on the tent didn’t stop it. We had to look for salvation in the car. By morning midges disappeared but we already had to return home.
