#1: Confluence area overview

(visited by Ole Henseler)

19-Apr-2015 -- After having studied the description of the confluence visit of Paul Goetti, I felt, I had to travel to this confluence as I was in Tokyo for business and had a day off over the weekend. It was the first time for years that I traveled without my Garmin etrix GPS as I thought I wouldn´t have a chance to come close to a confluence without a car in one day, so I had to use my Garmin forerunner and the mobile phone which worked out pretty well, unexpectedly...

This confluence was somehow special for me: It was the first one, where I traveled by train, the most eastern one, the most southern one and the first in Asia. Finding the way from Tokyo to Mitsukaido is pretty easy once you understand the brilliant Japanese Train System. I have never seen such a perfectly organized and clean mega city like Tokyo. And this would not be possible without their fantastic public transport system. All trains were in time, all signs were in sufficient English, I never took a wrong train.

Tokyo is too crowded for a countryside adapted German like me... However, after arriving in Mitsukaido, I walked towards the river and after 20 minutes found the small bridge to the other side. After passing some homes of rice farmers and another 500 m walk, I was about 35 m away from the confluence, right in the middle of a very muddy rice field. I circled around but gave up in the closest distance of approximately 9 m. After taking the pictures, I made my long way back to Tokyo´s chaos quarter Shibuya... What a difference to the silent countryside at the confluence. The next day, I flew out and landed somewhere between 50N 8E and 50N 9E after a 12-hour flight.
