... the day before

07-May-2016 -- This day we took a trip out to west – to Kuldiga. We liked the town. Cozy, clean and with its special atmosphere.

We took a walk in the centre and suburbs. We looked at local famous waterfall from different views including itself. We empathised to the poor fishes which stubbornly tried to overcome the obstacle and go to the Venta riverhead for the spawning. We had a delicious lunch in the cafe that located in an old former barn of XVII century. And of course we visited the nearby confluence.

From the village Mežvalde the earth road goes into the forest Riežupe. It’s called Maṉḡenes iela. It seems that in Latvia each more or less important road – forest or field – bears a status of a street and its own name. It is very convenient I must say!

After about a kilometre the road is interrupted with the half-broken stone bridge across the river Riežupe eponymous with the forest. However the further way is by foot. It’s possible to walk the surviving part of the capital bridge. Or to use its wooden substitute. It bends to the water and cheerfully springs with the steps.

After another couple of hundred meters the path branches to the left from our forest street and we approach fast to our goal. Along the way we meet the mass grave from the WWII. It buried six hundred people killed by the Nazis in 1941-1945.

The path gradually picks up to the opposite direction. So we seek out a barely visible track that spins off in a proper direction and move along it.

The pine and spruce forest looks wild. It’s not dense but still littered with trunks and branches of the dead trees. And it’s very dry! God forbid a stray spark – the fire will be joyful and horrible.

The confluence is in lowland. As usual in such places the coniferous give way to the deciduous. The small fry mostly – almost bushes. A few thin spruces and no pines at all. Definitely not the forest of my dream.

The same evening...
