30-Jul-2017 -- This is the last out of 13 reports reaching confluence points in Finland. The story starts from 61°N 28°E and continues from 63°N 26°E.
After a drive of 1:17 hours from 63°N 26°E, we were in the same situation as before: we had reached the end of an access road to the shores of a lake – this time Lake Verkkosalmi. The remaining distance to the confluence was 374 m, which we were able to cover partially on a forest track.
We found the confluence point in a pine forest mixed with various other tree species and a groundcover of blueberry, cowberry, and moss. The confluence was marked by a fallen tree. The terrain around the confluence was extremely uneven with huge holes and various boulders.
When we came back to our rental car at half past 10 PM, daylight was already fainting. So there was no way to make another valid visit to another confluence point this day. A look at the map showed us that the town Kupio was the best place to spend the night. We spent another 2 days in Finland without confluence hunting before we headed back to Switzerland.
