06-Jul-2016 -- Siberian city trip: industrial area at "the" Siberian river Yenisei

From Issyk-Kul to Lake Baikal we ride our Toyo 6000 kilometers on the Siberian Route. Passing smoking funnels, former gulags, (nuclear) test sites and a "white grave" - the Steppe of Kazakhstan offers lots of space for historical and current gigantism. On the longest road in the world within a country, we are surprised by cultural richness of metropolises of Russia between swamps, birch forests and mosquito attacks. This continues the story of 55°N 83°E.

We had mosquitoes in the morning and mosquitoes in the evening. Therefore, we set new priorities choosing sleeping places: There must be 4G :-) because the driver needs motivation to remain on his seat voluntarily after turning off the engine for another half an hour. He should be able to surf the Internet, because cooking and placing the sleeping mattresses has to be done without leaving the car.

Sightseeing Siberia is already a pleasure because there are almost no mosquitos in town. In addition, the metropolises hosting lot of architectural highlights. Don’t miss panoramic view from the town’s landmark Paraskeva Pyatnitsa.

The former closed city Krasnoyarsk has only been open to visitors since 1998. At nearby Zheleznogorsk, plutonium for Russian nuclear weapons program used to be produced. Today, the NGO "Citizens’ Center on Nuclear Non-Proliferation" is fighting to ensure that the entire world does not ship its nuclear waste to Krasnoyarsk-26 for "intermediate storage at an unlimited period" (German political phrase for nuclear waste repository).

"Fans of Volga may forgive me telling them that in my entire life I have never seen a more magnificent river than the Yenisei."
(Anton Chekhov)

Despite pollution problems one should not miss the view over the Yenisei for example at the swimming hotel "Lithuania" (Litvы). Whether by paddleboat or a cruise ship - if we ever do a cruise probably at “the” synonym of a Siberian river Yenisei. Unfortunately, we once again discover the main attraction for engineers at home: The impressive ship lift near Krasnoyarsk was the largest in the world until 2016. (Some great pictures here, here and here - and a video with original sound.)

The confluence is placed at the border between the districts Kirovsky and Leninsky. A few meters down the road once was the former production site of the "Siberian Heavy Equipment Production", where they used to produce Locomotives and until 2010 heavy-duty cranes.

Today, a truck is parked directly at the confluence. After we have zeroed at the rear axle, we continued towards Irkutsk and Ulan-Ude capital of the Buryats. There, at Lake Baikal the journey at the Siberian Route ends.
