  37°N 137°E (visit #4)

#1: Location of CP 37N 137E from a distance of 20 m

(visited by Thomas Barthel)

22-Jun-2018 -- Serendipitously I had the chance to have an extra holiday. I used my time for a bicycle trip in Japan, on the main island Honshu. While this I could manage to visit some confluence points. The fifth one was the CP 37°N 137°E.

After leaving the west coast near Hakui and passing the huge valley direction north east, I reached the city area of Nanao. The mentioned valley is like a natural border of the peninsula and former prefecture Noto in the north. Only two km before reaching the coast again, the distance to the CP was shown with 4.6 km direction south east. So I left the Hwy 159 by taking the road 177. Five km later I reached the ruins of Nanao Castle. There is a big parking area, information boards with flyers and rest rooms. So I took a flyer leading me on a well prepared path along some bases of long gone buildings. The castle was existent between the 14th and the 17th century. From the area of the former main building I enjoyed a fantastic view down to the city of Nanao.

From the ruins it was a further distance from 3.7 km to the CP. The uphill was not very steep anymore. Soon I reached the exact location. The confluence point is located direct on a tarred road, exactly on its western side. The road is partly overgrown. After the picture of the location I parked my bicycle exactly on the CP! I didn't see a big change in comparison to the visits 12 years ago. It was around 10:30 am., very hot, and a high humidity. So I went into the shadow and prepared my breaks for the upcoming downhill.

Following I continued my trip direction east, to reach the coast again. On that way the road changed into a muddy path. In addition to this it became partly a very steep downhill with large stones on the way. Later I passed a valley used for planting rice. Short before reaching the road 245 my small "white" road was drawn completely in a length of about 12 m! It must have been raining a lot here before! I had to shoulder my bike and walk on a small narrow path (at the right side of picture #09) to the other side of the gap. After that I soon reached the main road. On my way down to the coast I took pictures of bear signs and of a typical Japanese bell house in the village Hanazonomachi. I had also a stop at the local post office for buying stamps. The very friendly employee gave me some candy drops.

The confluence point 37°N 137°E is very good to reach because of its location on a road, but I better should have taken the same way back.
